ACTH-Dependent Cushing's Syndrome - Endocrine Biochemical Tests (Differential Diagnosis)

Biochemical (Endocrine) Tests for ACTH-Dependent Cushing's Syndrome:
  • High dose 2 day dexamethasone suppression test
  • 8mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test
  • Metyrapone stimulation test
  • Peripheral CRH stimulation test
  • Desmopressin stimulation test
  • Bilateral inferior petrosal sinus sampling with CRH stimulation test
Glossary:
CRH = Corticotropin releasing hormone
Desmopressin = Modified form of the normal human hormone arginine vasopressin.
Dexamethasone = Potent synthetic glucocorticoid steroid drug.
Metyrapone = Inhibits steroid 11β-hydroxylase blocking cortisol synthesis.
